Safety at Christmas

With the festive season gradually creeping up on us, it’s not just presents and cooking the perfect turkey that we need to think about…

December 25 is a very generous time of year where copious amounts of fluid, food and (of course) chocolate are consumed and homes across the world are filled with joy and laughter.  The run up to Christmas can be exciting, stressful and expensive. So what can we do to help ourselves and to be sure that Christmas will be a fun-filled day?

Land & Brand New Homes top tips:
1. If you rent your home wish to decorate the outside, check with your landlord that this is possible. There are some agreements and contracts that don’t allow for this (take note of the Brighton & Hove couple who had to take their Halloween decorations down even though they spent a lot of money on them!)

2. If you’re finding your electricity bill expensive, go easy on all the electrical decorations and lightings for your home

3. Be sure to switch off your Christmas tree lights when you go out.  There might be a fault which could cause a fire

4. Make sure that all candles are extinguished when you go to bed or leave the property, whether it be for 5 minutes or an hour

5. Don’t have all your presents on display to the public, especially the most valuable.  Unfortunately, there have been a large number of break-ins due to this reason

6. Make sure all windows are shut when you leave the property.  It will help to prevent burglary and also keep the warmth in!

7. Be sure to separate your rubbish and recycling – save the world by reducing your carbon foot print

8. Always use your burglary alarm. If you don’t have one, see if you can get one installed which is visible – this can work as a deterrent

9. Be sure to remove any keys that are near windows or doors. Also, never hide keys under a mat or flower pot as they will easily be found by burglars. Instead, entrust a spare key with a neighbour or friend who lives close by

10. Don’t leave the packaging of tv’s, laptops, dvd player etc outside.  You’ll only be making it easier for the burglar!
