I did a 5 year apprenticeship in printing from 1973. I hated school but really enjoyed going to college. Working for a small company there was only so much to be learned in house, but going to college gave me the chance to mix with other lads who were working in the same trade but with other machinery and other experiences. During the initial years of the apprenticeship I was expected to carryout all the mundane tasks during the working part of my week but once I had qualified, everything changed. Would I recommend it? Definately, it taught me a great deal about my chosen trade as well as giving me confidence as a person and in a work situation. The youngsters coming into the trade now do not have the same enthusiasm and discipline as was instilled in me as an apprentice.
