Get on your R’s …

Recycle – Reduce - Re-use

 Re-cycle

Does 30 million tonnes of waste a year mean anything to you?

75% of our rubbish is generated by packaging – I’m now REDUCING this by refusing plastic bags in shops and taking my own ‘green’ bags sold at the supermarket, and RE-USING them over and over again.  I’m buying more frequently (because I’m no saint) loose fruit and vegetables from my local shops to avoid using the car.

You may be RECYCLING

  • Glass
  • Newspapers
  • Plastic

Or RE-USING

  • Plastic bags/aluminium
  • Donating electrical goods and DIY equipment
  • Old mobiles
  • Unused medicines
  • Second hand clothes, furniture

Does your local council provide access to the right facilities to enable you to get on your R’s?  Please send in your suggestions for reducing waste – we’d love to know.  What do you do personally to recycle?

  1. I’ve just visited the Algarve and I think they have got it right. Their local councils have been putting metal bins (which look better then they sound) in convenient locations for homeowners to put their re-cycling in whenever they want, rather than having to wait for collection. I think this stops us putting things that could be re-cycled into the normal rubbish. Maybe we should go down the same route…

  2. Had an interesting read over the breakfast cereals today. It was reported in the Times that there is a fire risk from recycling in blocks of flats reported by fire officers saying that collections pose a threat if sacks of recyclable materials are left in front of doors or on landings which could catch fire and block escape routes.

This follows Hackney’s (London) ending its pilot recycling collections in blocks of flats. Instead they will install collection points - residents will therefore have to carry waste to them themselves. It is feared that fires containing recycled waste could produce significant heat and smoke in an enclosed stairwell, corridor or lobby landing.

    Absolutely the right decision!
